People Will Talk (1951)

(Due to boredom, I am reviewing movies I have seen before, which are coming to mind now.)

People Will Talk is about an arrogant yet charming doctor who falls in love with a pregnant woman and marries her to save her honour. Sweet. Yet, I felt the "love" was underdeveloped in the story. This made the movie seem quite unrealistic to me. How many charming, good looking doctors would marry a woman, hardly knowing or loving her, to save her honour? Yet, in the movie, he was supposedly in love with her. But the love story wasn't built up all that well.

There was another story line going on as well. But it really comes to culmination in one scene of the movie towards the end. It would have been nice if it had been spread evenly throughout the movie. So until that one scene, you really aren't too sure of what is going on exactly.

My favourite scene in the movie is when the doctor and two of his friends are playing with their train set, and they get into an argument due to timings of the train releases. Was quite funny. Grown educated men acting like little children.

Still, I shall give this film the benefit of the doubt. It was released in 1951, and it is a sweet little story that is refreshing to watch today. A little charmer amonst all the crap that Hollywood produces. So based on this, I would definitely recommend it. Although unrealistic, leaves me hopeful that there might be some decent men out there, somewhere. Well, one can dream. :)

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars!

lol sarah! you liked lake house but you didnt like this?!

arghhh!!!!

yeah the love story part of it wasnt that convincing lol and i argued about it with HR. I didnt think he was really in love with her when he married her but that she was in love with him.

i like this film because of all the other themes in it. one of my favourite scenes in this movie is in my profile on sc. hehe

I also like the scene where he tells off the nurse who says something nasty about the pregnant girl just after she leaves his office knowing that shes pregnant.

YaY!! Comments!!! :D I made this review especially for you Rafi lol, glad you commented *blush*

Where did I say I didn't like this? I liked it! I gave it a 4 out of 5. Minus 1 star because of the unconvincing love story. But it's quite a little charmer, this movie. I really did enjoy it very much!

Rudeness. It was not too heavy for me!!! I have seen PLENTY of heavy movies and understood them too, such as "Syriana" "Munich" and the list goes on. And I'm sorry the proper "ADJECTIVES" weren't there , grrr... I said it was CHARMING, what more do you need??? Meanie.

And I am SORRY about "2ndhand Lions" and "Cheaper by the Dozen" LOL... They are cute FAMILY movies.

But you liked SERENDIPITY, though, didn't you??? how about AMELIE? There are some pretty bad scenes, but I will write a review for Amelie soon...

There was nothing special or extraordinary about "Must Love Dogs" either! although I do love John Cusack. But it was predictable without great dialogue.

i cant believe she gave amelie 4.5 and this 4

for me people will talk was NOT about a love story. if i was going to judge it on that i wouldnt even give it 4.

its about arrogance, jealousy, commericalism of the health system, commercialism of alot of things, greed, coldness of the heart, doing good for others without expecting prestige/money etc, loyalty and so much more.

as i told hr cary played the character of a man, who is pretty much all good. hes successful, financially well off, occupies a prestigeous position in the uni, but people like him because of his character, and what hes done for them. Like he practised as a doctor in a small village/ town but was disguised as a butcher (as i remember it). So he didnt try to get all the trappings that men in particular get with a medical profession. He really was a man of principles. Don't you remember when hes talking about pickles hr?

Lol he also is a feminist, and his clinic if you noticed was for women.

He possesses something that few people, and few doctors these days do, he genuinely cares about people and doesnt judge them unduly.

lol maybe im building it up too much. i just enjoyed the film. it isnt that great, i wouldnt give it 5. but sarah gives out so many 5s that a 4 looks insulting!

lol yeah sarah, its unrealistic, but its like i said, you dont enjoy an unrealistic movie, unless the unrealism of it appeals to you somehow.

i mean there is no doubt that cary grant married the pregnant lady as fast as he did because he wanted her to save face. that, really is something i dont imagine any man doing. ie being so selfless.

Yeh Sarah's ratings are weird !!!!!!!!!!

I resent that! <_<

Uff, how many times do I have to say HR, Secondhand Lions and Cheaper by the Dozen are FAMILY movies!! Movies you can watch with youngsters that they would enjoy and you could enjoy with them!! I'm sorry you have a taste for only "mature" stuff <_< But once in a while it's nice to get in touch with the child in you!!!

And I like a lot of movies you like too, does that mean you have bad taste as well? :D
