Amelie (2001)

Amelie. This is a unique French film, which I happened to rent after seeing it listed as a favourite on many people's favourite movie lists.

It's about this mousey girl, Amelie, who vows to do good for other people if she can: Find the owner of a little box of treasures that was hidden in her apartment long ago by a boy, now a grown man, and make him smile by returning that box to him.

She also falls in love with this man who hangs around photo booths in subway/train stations, and she sends him on a little adventure to find her.

The positives of this movie:

The dialogues. It's quirky and imaginative. It talks about everyday events/things in a way that makes it seem extra special, and it makes you realise how you overlook the quirks of people you care about and the quirks of life. The cinematography. The angles and colours of each scene keep you engaged. The story itself is amusing and heart-warming.

The negatives:

The absolutely unncessary sex and strip club scenes. Once again, a little charmer of a film with unncessary crap, that otherwise would've been a perfect film and enjoyable for the entire family.

Amelie reminded me a lot of myself. She wants to do good for others and make them smile. Yet, she herself is shy and reserved, without many friends. But she has a really good heart and wants to be loved. She is quirky in a cute, adorable way.

I absolutely love what she does for her father. The travelling gnome. I wonder if this is where Travelocity got the idea from?

I rate it a 4 out of 5 stars. (Minus 1 for the added crap.)

I loved Amelie! It really was a feel good movie, like I just left the theatre after it feeling really good. I like how they introduced all the characters at the beginning with lil tidbits of into about them.

And I like how she got her revenge on the guy that scared her about her camera as a child. hehe

Yeah, it definitely is a feel-good-movie. But were those inapproriate scenes necessary? I hate when they do that to good movies! Grrr...

I liked the beginning as well, when the characters are being introduced and all the tid-bits! :)

Honestly, i don't really rmember those scenes...haven't watched the movie in a long time. It was probably necessary to show she's been in some sort of relationship but not the way they did it.

No, it wasn't to show she was in a relationship. There was a part where she is wondering how many people are having...ahem..., and they show a scene of different couples having you-know-what to count how many are happening in the city at that point in time!! It was absolutely unncessary and gross. And totally inappropriate. I hate how good movies are ruined with such unnecessary crap!!! Makes me so mad.

I agree that was gross and unnecessary. What I mean is, they show her growing up and her current life and where she lived, and where she worked. And how she thought, And went about things.

Its not surprising that they should show her being interested in a boy at some point in her life. but then...did she end up with the guy at the end? I should rewatch this movie. Like that would have been enough.

Zul,I was reviewing this for my blog..arggh!!

It isn't difficult to understand why this movie has been such a success with audiences around the world - it's the kind of motion picture that's both intelligent and immensely likable - just like the main character.Amelie is a wonderfully uplifting motion picture that features a sparkling performance by Audrey Tautou in the lead role. Tautou brings Amelie to life with a delightful mix of shyness, energy, and mischievousness. It doesn't take long for Tautou to win our sympathy, and, once gained, it's something she never loses.

If you have liked Amelie i would highly recommend you to watch "Run Lola Run"

I loved the scene where she messes up with the grocer's clock. I also liked how the old man is such a great painter but has brittle fingers. Quirks abound in the movie, but a great plot. :)

It's the annoying Raeesa again :)

I'm surprised that the ratings did not mention anything about the content of the movie. If I were you, I would lodge a complaint. It's not fair for a Muslims to rent movies only later to find out that it had inappropriate content.

Thanks for the warning... I don't know if you but you're helping a lot of people by telling them the content of the movie before they rent. InshaAllah, you will be rewarded.

Like I said earlier, is it really worth having your eyes and ears complain to Allah on the Day of Judgement?

Yours,
RA

R ahmed,
Thanks for the comment! :) I do check this website before watching any movie: http://kidsinmind.com It tells you the content of the movie. I always forward through inappropriate scenes, but I know they are there. I'm just saying that they are totally unncessary in all movies and I wish they wouldn't put them there to begin with!

I remember watching a Bollywood movie on Iranian Channel. They had even cut the scene where the Actor kisses a little girl on her cheek. That Actor is father of the little girl in the movie. She was only perhaps 8-9 years old. They had skipped that even!
